About us
Children of the Dodo was founded in September 2006 after two ordinary people got married in Mauritius and decided to do some good with the donations they received at their wedding. After visiting a number of convents and shelters we decided to help 3 groups of children.
The first group existed of 52 children from a shelter in Albion. These kids live in a 4 bedroom house that needed a paintjob very badly! They were very happy to see us, especially the second time around when our car was loaded with underwear, caps and little rings. Underwear was absolutely neccesary because there was none! The biggest surprise was an icecream van we brought with us. For security reasons it is normally impossible for the children to leave the property and enjoy an icecream!
The second group came from 2 shelters and existed of some 60 children. We found somebody with a bus to pick them up and took them to the hotel we got married. Upon arrival there were snacks and cocktails waiting for them, together with a t-shirt and a cap for everybody. After some games on the beach the hotel provided all children with a silver service lunch. That was a great experience for them! They got served like "normal" guests and enjoyed their exclusive lunch inmensely. After lunch it was time to go swimming, either in the sea or in the hotel pool. Again, an experience they won't forget easily. Later that afternoon the bus took them back and a fantastic day came to an end.
Our 3rd project was to provide a special party around Christmas for the children in Pointe aux Canonniers. This happened in december 2006 and was a great succes. Santa Claus came with some nice presents and there was also a nice lunch presented.
This was only the beginning of what has turned into one of the most important things in our lives. Day in day out we try to work towards helping more and more children on Mauritius. Our section Projects will tell you more about recent projects.
